WS User Guide

About this guide

WS is a suite of programs for weak-signal digital communication in amateur radio: WS (the main program), WS-MAP (wideband Q65/FT8 monitor) and EME65 (wideband JT65/Q65 for EME). WS grew out of WSJT-X and was formerly known as WSJT-X Improved. All modes and basic operating procedures are the same as in WSJT-X; for those, the WSJT-X User Guide remains the reference.

This guide is deliberately short. It explains every menu and every setting of WS, and what WS adds to WSJT-X.

Three GUI variants

WS always comes in three GUI variants. They share the same functions, menus and settings; only the arrangement of the main window differs. Each variant has its own installer.

Variant Best for

WS (standard)

The familiar WSJT-X layout. This is the default download.

WS AL (alternative layout)

A more compact window with a larger Band Activity pane, so you scroll less.

WS Widescreen

Wide monitors: the controls move to the side and the decode panes get the full height.

You can install the variants side by side in separate folders and compare them. They all use the same settings file (WS.ini), so your configuration carries over. On its first start WS takes over the settings of an existing WSJT-X installation.

To run several instances at the same time, start each one with its own --rig-name=NAME; every instance then keeps its own settings file.

Main window

The main window of WS looks and works like the WSJT-X main window, with extra buttons and more mouse actions. The WSJT-X User Guide describes the standard controls. This chapter covers only what is new or different in WS: everything you operate outside the menus and the Settings dialog. Help  Special mouse commands gives a short summary.

WS main window

Wait features

The Wait features finish a QSO for you when the other station does not answer at once or fades out in QSB. They all need Auto Seq checked and Enable Wait features on the General tab (on by default, see General).

With a Wait feature armed, a received message can switch your rig to transmit without you touching anything. Keep your amplifier, ATU and antenna ready, or disarm the feature.
Feature How it works

Wait and Reply

Armed automatically while a callsign is in DX Call and Enable Tx is off. When that station calls you (a message with your call and his call, without 73), WS switches Enable Tx on and continues the QSO. It also sends RR73 again if the other station did not copy the first one. Works in FT2, FT4, FT8, FST4, JT4, JT9, JT65, MSK144 and Q65. Tx turns off again after 8 periods (12 in MSK144).

Wait and Call

Click the DX Call button (it turns red). When the station in DX Call reappears with CQ, RRR, RR73 or 73, WS calls him up to three times. Works in FT2, FT4, FT8, FST4, MSK144 and Q65, in normal operation or as FT8 Hound. Disarmed by Halt Tx, Stop, switching Enable Tx off, clicking DX Call again, or as soon as the station answers you (the QSO then continues normally).

Wait and Pounce

Select a CQ: mode other than CQ: None (see CQ: selector and Ignore List), then right-click Enable Tx (it turns orange). WS answers the next CQ: the first one, or the most distant, strongest or weakest station of the period. Right-click Enable Tx again, or click Halt Tx or Stop, to disarm. Not available as Fox.

Wait and Pounce respects the filters. For example, WS can wait only for CQ calls with a certain prefix, grid, callsign or keyword. With Filters for Wait & Pounce only all decodes stay visible, but Wait and Pounce answers only stations that pass the filters (see Filters).

Enable Tx and DX Call turn yellow whenever a received message may switch Tx on: with a callsign in DX Call, Auto Seq on and the Wait features enabled, and always in Hound mode. Right-click DX Call to clear DX Call, DX Grid and the standard messages; this disarms Wait and Reply and Wait and Call at once.

CQ: First

When you call CQ, WS answers the first station that calls you. With Wait and Pounce, it answers the first CQ.

CQ: Max Dist

Picks the most distant station (a grid is needed to calculate the distance).

CQ: Max dB / CQ: Min dB

Picks the strongest / weakest station.

The Ignore button (or Ctrl+I) puts the callsign in DX Call on the Ignore List. With Filters  Ignore stations from Ignore List checked, the CQ: modes (Wait and Pounce) skip these stations; Filters  Hide stations from Ignore List removes them from Band Activity. Clear the list with File  Erase Ignore List. See Filters for the other Ignore and Hide options.

Freq checkbox

A tooltip shows the audio frequency under the mouse pointer.

Time stamp

Shows the UTC on the waterfall on the Left or Right, or Off.

Callsigns on the waterfall

With View  Callsigns on waterfall  Show decoded callsigns (or Show Callsigns in the Wide Graph), decoded calls appear as labels on the waterfall at their frequency: red for the call in DX Call, green for CQ, black for the rest. The × TR box sets how many periods a label stays; Clear removes all labels. Left-click a label to put the call and grid in DX Call / DX Grid, set Rx to that signal, set Tx even/1st for the reply and generate the standard messages. Font, transparency and position are in the View menu (see View). In Q65, Decode  Disable clicks on waterfall turns label clicks off.

Buttons

Right-click Tune

Starts the ATU of the rig via CAT. The button reads Tuning for 6 s; right-click again to stop. Needs a Hamlib rig model that supports tuning.

Right-click Enable Tx

Arms or disarms Wait and Pounce (Wait features).

Click DX Call / right-click DX Call

Arms Wait and Call / clears DX Call, DX Grid and the messages.

Right-click Lookup / Add / Ignore

Looks up the call in DX Call on qrz.com / hamqth.com / qrzcq.com in your browser.

Erase

With Alternate Erase button behavior (General): click clears Band Activity, right-click clears Rx Frequency, double-click clears both.

Right-click Decode

Clears a hung decoder.

Right-click CQ only

Shows only messages that contain the call in DX Call. The box turns red and reads DX Call; right-click again to go back.

Right-click Tx5

Keeps your Tx5 free text (yellow) so it is not cleared.

Right-click Tx even/1st

Freezes the checkbox. Right-click the MSK button to unfreeze.

Right-click H

Switches SuperFox mode on or off.

Right-click FT8

Switches the last used Special Operating Activity on or off.

Right-click Q65 / JT65

Switches to Q65 Pileup mode / JT9.

Mouse wheel over the dial frequency, or left-click / right-click

Changes the dial frequency by -1 kHz / +1 kHz.

Band buttons

View  Band Buttons adds a row of band buttons, in all three GUI variants. Click a button to go to the frequency of the current mode in your frequency list. In FT8, FT4 and FT2, right-click 80 m to 10 m to go to the FT8 DXpedition frequency of that band (6 m: FT8 only). View  VHF / UHF Buttons switches the row to the bands from 8 m to 13 cm.

On 2 m, a right-click goes to 4 m (Regions 1 and 3) or 1.25 m (Region 2); on 70 cm, a right-click goes to 23 cm.

Filters in the main window

The status label at the bottom left shows when filters hide decodes: it changes from green Receiving to cyan Receiving, Filters On. Check BP (bypass) to switch all filters off for a while without losing their settings; the label then reads Receiving, Filters bypassed. The filter lists are set up on the Filters tab (Filters); quick filters are in the Filters menu (Filters).

Distance, azimuth and US States

If a message contains a valid locator, Band Activity can show the distance and great-circle azimuth, lined up in columns with the country. With Show US States, the US State or Canadian Province is shown too. Turn these on and set the column spacing on the General tab (General).

Contest name and comments

With CQ with individual contest name and a Contest name of up to 4 letters (e.g. PACC) on the Advanced tab, WS calls "CQ PACC" instead of "CQ TEST" or "CQ RU" when a Special Operating Activity is active (FT modes, MSK144, Q65; not as Fox or Hound).

With Special operating activity to comments on the Reporting tab (Reporting), the Log QSO comment is filled with the activity, e.g. "EU VHF Contest", "ARRL Field Day" or, with an individual contest name, "PACC Contest". Retained comments and dB reports to comments take priority.

LiveCQ: who heard me

With Enable Q65 LiveCQ on the Reporting tab (Reporting) and mode Q65, WS asks the LiveCQ server once per period which stations have decoded your call. Those stations get a check mark and a bright green frame on their waterfall label, and a check mark in the Active Stations window in Q65 Pileup mode. So the DX can pick callers that really copy him. The bottom of the Active Stations window shows LiveCQ connected or a red LiveCQ NO CONNECTION.

TX Inhibit

With Enable TX Inhibit on the Radio tab (Radio), another program can hold WS off the air while a priority radio on the same band transmits. The status label then shows Inhibit.

Click-to-work from WS-MAP and EME65

With Decode  Accept WS-MAP/EME65 click events checked, clicking a callsign in WS-MAP or EME65 sets DX Call, DX Grid, the frequency, the Tx period and the submode in WS. A double-click there can also switch Enable Tx on. This works in JT65 and Q65 with Enable VHF and submode features. WS also processes the decodes forwarded by EME65. Your DX Call and DX Grid are sent back, so WS-MAP or EME65 can follow them.

If several WS instances watch the same source, click Claim WS-MAP in the one that should act on clicks. Choose the source with Decode  WS-MAP/EME65 source (see Decode).

Message Creator and QSY Monitor

These windows help you arrange a QSY with your QSO partner, for example from an EME frequency to another band.

View  Message Creator

Builds a short QSY request (band, mode and kHz) for the station in DX Call, puts it in the free-text message and switches Enable Tx on.

View  Enable Message Popups

When a received message asks you to QSY, a popup shows the request and lets you answer OKQSY or NOQSY.

View  QSY Monitor

Lists all QSY requests heard, with UTC, call, frequency and mode.

Diagnostic mode

Diagnostic mode collects data to find problems with WS or with its rig control (Hamlib errors, COM ports that do not respond, and so on).

  1. Select Save  Diagnostic mode.

  2. Close and restart WS, then reproduce the fault.

  3. Close WS as soon as the fault has appeared: the log files grow quickly.

WS creates a logs folder on your desktop (with a subfolder per --rig-name instance) containing ws_syslog.log and WS_RigControl.log. Open them with a text editor, or send them to the developers. Diagnostic mode switches itself off the next time WS closes; to cancel it earlier, select Save  Default event logging.

Dark style

View  Use Dark Style switches WS to a dark theme at once, without a restart. It also adapts the waterfall lines and the button colours. With dark style, choose softer (pastel) background colours on the Colors tab. See View.

Open Ctrl+O

Stops Monitor and opens a recorded .wav file, which is then decoded like live audio.

Open next in directory

Opens and decodes the next .wav file in the same folder.

Decode remaining files in directory Shift+F6

Opens and decodes all following .wav files in the folder, one after the other.

Delete all *.wav & *.c2 files in SaveDir

After a confirmation, deletes all saved audio files (.wav and .c2) in the save directory.

Erase ALL.TXT

After a confirmation, deletes ALL.TXT, the record of everything you received and transmitted.

Erase wsjtx_log.adi

After a confirmation, deletes your ADIF log file.

Erase wsjtx.log

After a confirmation, deletes wsjtx.log, the simple QSO list written by Log QSO. WS uses it for the "worked today" filters and so that Wait and Pounce does not call stations you have already logged.

Erase Ignore List

After a confirmation, empties the Ignore List (filled with the Ignore button).

Erase WSPR hashtable

After a confirmation, deletes the table WSPR uses to resolve hashed compound callsigns.

Erase list of Q65 callers

After a confirmation, deletes the list of callsigns that WS remembers from Q65 decodes.

Reset Cabrillo log …​

After a confirmation, erases all QSOs of the current contest from the contest log. They stay in the ADIF log but can no longer be exported to Cabrillo. The serial number goes back to 1 and the score in Active Stations is reset.

Export Cabrillo log …​

Saves the contest log as a Cabrillo file for submission.

Open log directory

Opens the WS data folder (logs, ALL.TXT and so on) in your file manager.

Settings…​

Opens the Settings window (also F2). See the Settings chapter.

Exit

Closes WS.

On macOS, Settings (as Preferences) and Exit (as Quit) appear in the application menu instead of the File menu.
Configurations menu

A configuration is a complete, named set of settings. Many operators keep one per mode or per station setup (for example "FT8 HF" and "Q65 EME") and switch with two clicks.

The menu lists all configurations; the one in use is checked. Each configuration opens a small submenu (left: another configuration, right: the one in use):

Clone

Makes a copy named "name - Copy". Rename it and adjust its settings to create a new configuration.

Clone Into …​

Overwrites all settings of this configuration with those of another one you pick. Asks for confirmation. Only shown when there is more than one configuration.

Reset

After a confirmation, sets this configuration back to default values.

Rename …​

Gives the configuration a new name.

Delete

After a confirmation, deletes the configuration. The configuration in use cannot be deleted, so this item is not shown for it.

To start WS directly in a configuration, use the command-line option --config NAME (or -c NAME), for example ws -c Echo.
View menu

Waterfall

Opens the Wide Graph window with spectrum and waterfall.

Astronomical data

Opens (checked) or closes the Astronomical Data window: Moon and Sun data, EME Doppler shift, Doppler tracking and sked frequency.

Message averaging F7

Opens the Message Averaging window, which shows the periods used for averaged decodes (JT4, JT65, Q65).

Echo Graph F8

Opens the Echo Graph window for Echo mode.

Fast Graph F9

Opens the Fast Graph window for the fast modes (MSK144 and fast JT9).

Contest log

Shows the QSOs of the current contest and their count.

Fox log

Shows the QSOs made as Fox in FT8 DXpedition mode.

Color highlighting scheme

A small legend of the current decode highlighting colours (CQ, My Call, New DXCC, LotW user and so on). The colours are set on the Colors settings tab.

Active Stations

Lists recently decoded stations, for example to find the most distant ones in a distance-scored contest, with Rate, Score and Band Changes. Click a line to call that station. With WS-MAP running, it shows the stations WS-MAP decodes across its whole bandwidth; a single click transfers the QSO data and sked frequency to WS, a double-click calls the station.

SWL Mode

Hides the lower control panel so the decode panes get the whole window. Useful when several instances run at once. Size and position of this view are remembered separately.

Message Creator

Composes special messages, e.g. a QSY request to another band or mode, or a short canned message, sent to the station in DX Call. Opening it also turns on Enable Message Popups.

QSY Monitor

Shows the special messages that other stations send to each other and to you.

Enable Message Popups

A popup window appears when a special message is addressed to you, with buttons to reply.

Band Buttons

Shows a row of HF band buttons (160 m to 70 cm); the current band is green. Click a button to go to your preferred frequency for that band and mode (set with Pref on the Frequencies settings tab). Right-click on 80 m to 10 m (FT8, FT4, FT2) goes to the usual DXpedition frequency, on 6 m (FT8) to 50.323 MHz. See also Help  Special mouse commands.

VHF / UHF Buttons

Replaces the HF buttons with a VHF/UHF/microwave set (8 m to 24 GHz). Only visible while Band Buttons is checked.

Use Dark Style

Switches all windows to a dark theme. It does more than a plain dark stylesheet: WS also adjusts some internal settings and uses a stylesheet optimized for it. Afterwards, change the highlight colours on the Colors settings tab to softer, pastel tones.

WS can write decoded callsigns directly on the waterfall, at the frequency where each station was heard.

Menu item What it does

Show decoded callsigns

Turns the callsign labels on or off. Turning them off removes all labels. Opening a .wav file also clears them.

Persist 1 period …​ Persist 5 periods

How long a label stays after the station was last decoded, in Tx/Rx periods (default 2). The same value can be set in the Wide Graph window.

Font size

Font size submenu
Label size: Small (7 pt), Normal (8 pt), Medium (10 pt) or Large (12 pt).

Transparency

Transparency submenu
How much the waterfall shows through the labels: None, Low, Medium or High.

Position

Position submenu
Top of waterfall, or Bottom of waterfall (above divider) so the newest signals at the top stay uncovered.

Save menu

No audio files are saved.

Save decoded

Saves the audio (.wav) of every period with at least one decode in the save directory.

Save all

Saves the audio of every period.

Remove saved files after 30 days

At each program start, WS deletes all files in the save directory that are older than 30 days.

Don’t split ALL.TXT

All decodes and transmissions go to one ALL.TXT (default).

Split ALL.TXT yearly

One file per year, e.g. 2026-ALL.TXT.

Split ALL.TXT monthly

One file per month, e.g. 2026-09-ALL.TXT.

Disable writing of ALL.TXT

Nothing is written to ALL.TXT.

Default event logging

Normal, minimal internal logging. Also switches Diagnostic mode off again.

Diagnostic mode

Collects detailed data to troubleshoot WS or its communication with your rig. It takes effect after a restart and switches itself off when WS is closed the next time. A logs folder appears on your desktop with ws_syslog.log and WS_RigControl.log; send these to the developers if asked. Close WS soon after the fault has appeared, as the files grow quickly.

Disable event logging

Turns internal event logging off.

Language menu

Chooses the language of the WS user interface. English is the default; the other entries are the translations that come with WS, each shown in its own language.

When you pick a language, WS asks whether to restart its window now:

Rebuilds the main window in the new language within a few seconds, the same way as switching to another configuration. WS itself keeps running. While WS is transmitting or tuning the window is not restarted; the new language then applies the next time WS starts.

Later

Keeps the current language until WS is started again.

The choice applies to all configurations. Starting WS with --language <code> (for example ws --language de) overrides it for that run.

Translations are made by volunteers and can be incomplete; texts that are not translated yet appear in English.

Most items open a web page or a PDF in your browser, so they need an internet connection.

On macOS, About WS appears in the application menu.
Filters menu

Quick filters for the Band Activity pane. The lists they use (Ignore List, Whitelist, Territories) are set on File  Settings  Filters, see Filters. All filters can be combined. The BP checkbox on the main window bypasses them with one click. While a Hide filter is on, the status label turns cyan and reads "Receiving, Filters On" (green "Receiving, Filters bypassed" with BP).

Hide stations worked before on band

Hides messages from calls already in your log on the current band.

Hide stations worked today or yesterday

Hides calls you logged today (or yesterday). The item reads "…​ worked today" unless the matching option on the Filters tab adds yesterday.

Hide stations from Ignore List

Hides calls on the Ignore List. The Ignore button adds the DX Call to that list; erase it from the File menu.

Ignore stations worked before on band

Such stations stay visible, but WS does not answer them automatically (CQ: First / Max Dist / Max dB / Min dB, Wait and Pounce, Wait and Reply).

Ignore stations worked today or yesterday

Same, for calls logged today (or yesterday).

Ignore stations from Ignore List

Same, for calls on the Ignore List.

Hide stations from Territory 1 …​ 4

Hides stations whose country name contains the text entered for that territory. Once you enter a territory, the item shows its name (e.g. "Hide stations from Italy").

Hide stations from Europe, North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Oceania, Antarctica

Hides all stations from that continent. Handy for showing only DX.

Highlight callsigns worked before on band

Grey background for calls already worked on this band.

Highlight callsigns worked today or yesterday

Yellow on dark grey for calls logged today (or yesterday).

Highlight callsigns from Ignore List

Yellow on dark red for calls on the Ignore List.

Highlight stations from Territory 1 …​ 4

Purple background for calls from that territory.

Highlight Whitelist entries

Magenta background for calls that contain a Whitelist entry. The Whitelist filter itself does not have to be on.

Decode menu

WS shows only the items that apply to the current mode. Some need Enable VHF and submode features (File  Settings  General).

Fast

Fastest decoding, lowest sensitivity.

Normal

Medium depth.

Deep

Best sensitivity, slower, with a slightly higher chance of false decodes. Greyed out in Echo, FreqCal and JT65 with VHF features.

Use multithreaded FT8 decoder

FT8 only. Runs several decoder threads in parallel. On a busy band this usually gives more decodes. For extreme weak-signal work the single-threaded Deep decoder is often better. Configure it under Parameters.

Fine tuning for the multithreaded FT8 decoder. It has no effect unless Use multithreaded FT8 decoder is on.

Number of threads
Number of threads

Auto (default) leaves some cores free: with 2-4 logical cores it uses one fewer, with 5-8 two fewer, with 9-15 three fewer, and with 16 or more it uses 12. 1-12 set the count directly, capped at the number of cores.

Decoding cycles
Decoding cycles

1, 2 or 3 (default) cycles of 3 passes each, so 3, 6 or 9 passes. More cycles find more weak signals but take longer. Early decodes (see Decoder start) always use 2 cycles.

QSO RX freq sensitivity
QSO RX freq sensitivity

Low, Medium (default), High. Threshold for a special decoder that looks for the expected messages from the DX Call at your Rx frequency during a QSO. Higher gives more decodes but also more false ones. In Hound mode Low is always used.

Decoder sensitivity

Minimum: normal sync thresholds. Use low thresholds: lower sync thresholds, so more candidates are tried. Use subpass (default): low thresholds plus extra weak-signal subpasses. More sensitive also means more CPU load.

Decoder start
Decoder start

When decoding starts in the 15 s period. 2-Stage: early decode at about 11.8 s, final decode at 14.1 s. 3-Stage: at about 11.8, 13.2 and 14.4 s. Early: one decode at 13.8 s. Normal (default): 14.1 s. Late: 14.4 s. The staged settings show strong signals sooner.

Wideband DX Call search

On (default): AP search for the DX Call’s messages across the whole passband. Off: only in a narrow window around the Rx frequency.

Hide FT8 dupe messages

On (default): if the threads decode the same message twice in one period, it is shown once, with the stronger report.

Skip a8 decodes

Turns off the "a8" attempt: a decode at the Rx frequency of the expected message from the DX Call, built from DX Call and DX Grid.

Enable averaging

JT4, JT65 and Q65 with VHF features. Averages successive periods to decode signals too weak for one period. The panes become Single-Period Decodes and Average Decodes.

Enable deep search

JT4 and JT65 with VHF features. When normal decoding fails, it compares the signal with likely messages built from your call, the DX Call, the DX Grid and CALL3.TXT.

Enable AP

The first of the two items. FT8 only: a priori (AP) decoding, which uses your call, the DX Call and the QSO state to find weaker messages. AP decodes are marked a1 …​ a8.

The second item. JT65 with VHF features only: AP decoding for JT65.

Auto Clear Avg after decode

After a successful decode within F Tol of the Rx frequency, clears the average so the next message starts clean.

Accept WS-MAP/EME65 click events

Q65 and JT65 with VHF features (default on). Clicking a station in WS-MAP or EME65 sets the DX Call, grid, frequency and period in WS. With Double-click on call sets Tx enable on, a double-click also starts the QSO. It also brings in the decodes that EME65 forwards.

Claim WS-MAP

Shown when click events are accepted. If several WS instances watch the same WS-MAP/EME65 source, only the instance holding the claim acts on clicks. A claim is dropped automatically if its instance stops refreshing it for 10 s. The Claim WS-MAP button on the main window does the same.

Which WS-MAP or EME65 instance WS listens to.

  • Auto (default) and 1: the default instance (Instance ID 1 or unset in the WS-MAP settings). Use this with a single WS-MAP.

  • 2, 3, 4: only the instance with that Instance ID.

Changing the source releases any claim. The change takes effect at once; restarting WS afterwards is recommended.

Disable clicks on waterfall

JT65 and Q65 with VHF features. Protects your Rx/Tx offsets from accidental clicks on the waterfall. Hold Alt to click anyway.

Hide AP information

FT8 only. Removes the a1 …​ a9 and ? marks from displayed decodes.

Reduce false decodes

FT8, not in special operating modes. Drops weak decodes that look implausible, for example odd combinations of /P, /R, R, hashed calls or contest exchanges at low SNR. These lines are not written to ALL.TXT. With the single-threaded decoder, decodes below -20 dB are also hidden if the calls are not in ALLCALL7.TXT and do not look like valid callsigns.

Full Duplex Mode

Keeps receiving and decoding while you transmit, e.g. with audio from a second receiver or a WebSDR. Works for FT8, FT4, Q65, MSK144 and the other modes.

Mode menu

Selects the operating mode. The menu is locked while you transmit. For details of each mode, see the WSJT-X User Guide.

Tools menu
Menu item What it does

Erase reference spectrum

Clears the reference spectrum being measured.

Measure reference spectrum

Starts Monitor and averages the received audio spectrum. Click Stop to save it to refspec.dat. Check Ref Spec in the Wide Graph to flatten the audio with this filter.

Measure phase response

Turns MSK144 phase training on or off. WS trains on decodes from the DX Call and saves the phase-equalization coefficients to a file in the data directory. Training ends on its own once it has enough data.

Equalization tools …​

Opens a window that plots the measured, proposed and current phase and group delay, plus the reference spectrum. Use it to load (Phase …​), refresh or discard phase-equalization data.

Execute frequency calibration cycle

In FreqCal mode, retunes the rig to the next FreqCal frequency in File  Settings  Frequencies at the end of each period, so you can measure several stations of known frequency in turn.

Solve for calibration parameters

Fits slope (ppm) and intercept (Hz) to the measurements in fmt.all and shows the result. Apply stores them as your calibration in File  Settings  Frequencies. fmt.all can then be renamed to fmt.bak.

Region 1: Europe, Africa, Middle East, northern Asia. Region 2: the Americas. Region 3: southern Asia and the Pacific. Selects the matching default frequencies.

Message generation for type 2 compound callsign holders

Only for calls with an add-on prefix or suffix that is not in the short list (Help  List of Type 1 prefixes and suffixes). Chooses which generated message (Tx1, Tx3 or Tx6) carries your full call.

Display

Setting What it does

Start new period decodes at top

Each period starts at the top of Band Activity and does not scroll away, so you can double-click while decoding is still running.

Blank line between decoding periods

Separator line between periods in Band Activity.

Show blank line with time stamp

The separator line also shows the UTC of the period.

Behavior

Enable Tx turns off after a 73 or free-text message.

Calling CQ forces Call 1st

When you call CQ, Call 1st is checked so WS answers the first caller automatically.

Alternate F1-F6 bindings

Switches the F1–F6 shortcuts for the Tx messages to the contest assignment (see Help  Keyboard shortcuts).

Enable VHF and submode features

Shows the VHF/UHF/microwave controls (submodes, averaging, Sh, auto-QSY and so on). Turn it off on HF: it disables wideband JT65 multi-decoding.

Allow Tx frequency changes while transmitting

Uncheck if your rig cannot process CAT commands during Tx (often needed with split).

Decode after EME delay

Starts decoding later in 1-minute modes, so EME signals delayed by about 2.5 s are included.

Single decode

For JT4, JT65, Q65 and FST4: decodes only near the Rx frequency (within F Tol) instead of searching the whole passband. In JT4/JT65/Q65 the two panes become Single-Period Decodes and Average Decodes.

Tune watchdog

Stops Tune after the set number of seconds.

MSK144/Q65: Tx until 73 is received

Keeps sending until the other station’s 73 arrives, at most 10 attempts. Helpful for difficult VHF/UHF/SHF QSOs.

Auto-open/close Astronomical data window

Opens the Astronomical Data window when you switch to Q65 or JT65 with Decode after EME delay on, and closes it when no longer needed.

kHz entry without k (restart required)

In the frequency box, "164" followed by Enter means +164 kHz within the current MHz (438.065 → 438.164 MHz). Handy for jumping between EME segments from the numeric keypad.

Turn progress bar red while transmitting

Makes Tx easy to see at a glance.

CW ID after 73 / ID Interval

Sends a CW ID after every 73 or free text / every N minutes (0 = off), always in the quiet part of the period.

Tx watchdog

Stops unattended transmissions after the set number of minutes.

Additional features

These options come from WSJT-X Improved and are not in WSJT-X.

Setting What it does

Show US States

Maps grid locators to US States and Canadian Provinces (useful without JTAlert). Some grids span several states; then all are listed.

Enable Wait features

Turns Wait and Reply, Wait and Call and Wait and Pounce on (default). See Wait features.

Clear DX Call after QSO / Clear DX Grid after QSO

Empties the DX Call / DX Grid box when the QSO is logged.

Show distance in messages with grid / Show azimuth in messages with grid

Adds distance and great-circle azimuth to every message with a valid locator.

Erase decodes after band change / Erase decodes after mode change

Clears Band Activity when you change band / mode.

Alternate Erase button behavior

Erase works like in JTDX: left-click clears Band Activity, right-click clears Rx Frequency, double-click clears both.

Set Rx frequency to Tx frequency after QSO

After logging, Rx moves to your Tx frequency.

Band hopping every minute

With band hopping on, WS normally changes band every other minute. Check this to change band every minute.

Align DXCC/distance/azimuth and the two number boxes

Lines country, distance and azimuth up in columns. The first box sets the spaces between message and country (also without Align), the second the spaces between country and distance/azimuth.

If you use a callsign with an add-on prefix or suffix, or want to work such a station, read Nonstandard Callsigns in the WSJT-X User Guide.

Radio

Rig

Setting What it does

Rig

Your radio model, or a control program that owns the radio (DX Lab Suite Commander, Flrig, Ham Radio Deluxe, Hamlib NET rigctl, OmniRig Rig 1/2, TCI Client). None means no CAT control.

Poll Interval

How often WS reads frequency and mode from the rig. 1–3 s suits most radios. Greyed out for rigs that report changes by themselves.

CAT Control

Setting What it does

Port

The serial port of your CAT interface (e.g. COM3 or /dev/ttyUSB0). For a control program it becomes Network Server or TCI Server (host:port); leave it blank for the default on this computer. For a few SDR kits it becomes USB Device.

Baud Rate / Data Bits / Stop Bits

Must match the CAT menu of your radio. Default keeps the value Hamlib knows for your model.

Handshake

Usually None. A few radios, particularly some Kenwoods, need Hardware (RTS/CTS). A wrong setting leaves CAT unresponsive.

Force Control Lines DTR: / RTS:

Holds DTR or RTS permanently High or Low, e.g. to power an interface. Leave blank unless you know you need it. Not available for a line that is used for PTT on the same port.

Update Hamlib

These options come from WSJT-X Improved and are not in WSJT-X. They work on Windows only; on Linux and macOS the box is called Hamlib Version and just shows the version in use.

Setting What it does

64-bit / 32-bit

Which Hamlib DLL to download. Choose the one matching your WS installation.

Update Hamlib

Downloads the latest Hamlib DLL, which often adds or fixes rig support. The current DLL is kept as a backup. Restart WS to use the new one.

Revert Update

Goes back to the backed-up DLL, again after a restart.

In use / Backed up

The Hamlib version WS is running and the version of the backup.

PTT Method

Setting What it does

VOX

The radio’s VOX keys the transmitter. Needs no interface.

CAT

PTT by CAT command, if the rig supports it. Usually the right choice with a control program such as OmniRig or Flrig.

DTR / RTS

A serial control line keys the rig. Many USB radios can map this line to PTT (Icom: USB SEND, Yaesu: PC KEYING). RTS is not available on the CAT port with Hardware handshake.

Port

Serial port for DTR / RTS; may be the same as the CAT port. The value CAT is for interfaces like OmniRig that switch the lines remotely.

Enable TX Inhibit

For stations that share a band with a priority radio (DTR / RTS PTT only): another program can hold WS off the air while that radio transmits.

Transmit Audio Source

Setting What it does

Rear/Data / Front/Mic

Selects the rig’s Tx audio input by CAT, if the radio supports it. Only active with PTT method CAT. Rear/Data is usually best.

Mode

Setting What it does

None / USB / Data/Pkt

The mode WS sets on the radio. Data/Pkt if your rig has it (often selects the rear audio input and a wider filter), otherwise USB. None leaves the mode alone.

Split Operation

Setting What it does

Rig

Uses the radio’s own split (VFO A and B).

Fake It

Uses VFO A only and retunes it for each transmission. Works with any rig.

None

No split (not recommended).

With split, WS moves the Tx dial in 500 Hz steps so that the Tx audio stays between 1500 and 2000 Hz. Audio harmonics then fall outside the radio’s filter and your signal stays clean. This applies in FT4, FT8 and FST4, and in all modes when Enable VHF and submode features is off. Doppler tracking also needs split.

Test CAT and Test PTT

Setting What it does

Test CAT

Connects to the radio with these settings. Green: OK. Red: error, with a message.

Test PTT

Keys the transmitter without audio; click again to release. Check that your rig and interface switch as expected. With VOX use Tune on the main window instead.

Rig Data

These options come from WSJT-X Improved and are not in WSJT-X.

Setting What it does

Display PWR, SWR and ALC

While transmitting, shows the output power (in watts, next to the Pwr slider) and SWR and ALC in the status bar. SWR above 1.5 turns the field yellow, above 2.0 red. Needs a rig that reports these values; not available with None, OmniRig, DX Lab Suite Commander, Ham Radio Deluxe or the Kenwood TS-480/850/870.

Halt Tx when SWR > 2.5

Stops transmitting at once and shows a warning. Check your antenna.

Highlight ALC > 50% / Highlight ALC > 90%

Turns the status field yellow / red when ALC goes over the limit, so you notice overdriving.

The last three options need Display PWR, SWR and ALC.

Audio

Soundcard

Setting What it does

Input / Output

The sound card connected to your radio (e.g. the rig’s USB audio CODEC), set to 48000 Hz, 16 bit. The box on the right selects the channel: usually Mono, or Left, Right or Both in special setups.

Refresh

Reloads the device list, e.g. after plugging in a USB radio.

Use TCI Audio (restart required) / Rx 0 dB

Only shown with a TCI rig (e.g. an SDR). The audio then comes over the TCI connection instead of a sound card, and the devices show TCI audio. Rx lowers the received audio level (0 to -50 dB). Restart WS after changing it.

Sort alphabetically

Sorts the device names alphabetically and lists only devices that can record or play PCM audio. Unchecked, the system order is used.

Hide ALSA CARD subdevices (Linux only)

Hides the CARD= entries, which are usually unusable. Works only with Sort alphabetically checked.

If the output device is also your computer’s default sound device, turn off all system sounds. Otherwise you transmit them on air.

Save Directory

Setting What it does

Location / Select

Folder for the .wav files written by Save. By default the save folder in the log directory.

AzEl Directory

Setting What it does

Location / Select

Folder for azel.dat, which holds Sun and Moon position and Doppler for antenna tracking programs. It is updated every second while the Astronomical Data window is open.

Enable extra line in azel.dat

Adds a line with Dpol, MNR, Dgrd and the echo widths, for tracking programs that read these values.

Remember power settings by band

Setting What it does

Transmit

Remembers the Pwr slider for each band and restores it when you change band.

Tune

Keeps a separate Pwr setting per band for Tune. When Tune ends, the slider returns to your transmit power.

Tx Macros

Settings, Tx Macros tab

Tx macros are short free-text messages you send often, such as TNX 73 GL. They appear in the drop-down list of the Tx5 message in the main window.

Macro list

Setting What it does

Text field and Add

Type a message and click Add to append it to the list. Only characters allowed in messages can be typed; the text is converted to capitals.

Delete

Removes the selected messages. Right-click → Delete does the same, or removes the message under the cursor if nothing is selected.

List

The macros in the order of the Tx5 drop-down. Drag and drop to reorder. Double-click a message to edit it. Click, Shift+click and Ctrl+click select several messages.

A free-text message is limited to 13 characters, including spaces.
You can also type a message into Tx5 in the main window and press Enter; it is added to the list. In FT8, FT4, FST4, MSK144 and Q65, a message that starts with $DX (or $DXCALL) has that word replaced by the base callsign in DX Call when it is sent.

Reporting

Logging

Setting What it does

Logbook location / Select

The ADIF file WS writes your QSOs to. The default is wsjtx_log.adi in the WS data directory. Select picks an existing .adi file or names a new one. After OK, WS switches to that file and re-reads it for worked-before status.

Prompt me to log QSO

Opens the partly filled-in Log QSO window when you send 73 or a free-text message. Turns Log automatically off.

Op Call

The operator’s callsign, if different from the station callsign. It goes into the Operator field of the log entry.

Log automatically

Logs a completed QSO without showing the Log QSO window. Turns Prompt me to log QSO off.

Contesting only

With Log automatically: logs automatically only during a contest activity (NA VHF, EU VHF, WW Digi, ARRL Digi, Field Day, RTTY Roundup). Other QSOs open the Log QSO window. Fox QSOs are always logged automatically.

Fill missing grids with 'ZZ00'

Logs ZZ00 as the grid when the other station did not send one.

Log 4-digit grids

Shortens 6-character locators to 4 characters in the log.

Log dial frequency instead of Tx frequency

Logs the rig’s dial frequency. Unchecked, WS logs dial frequency plus your Tx audio offset.

Convert mode to RTTY

Logs JT9 QSOs as mode RTTY, for logging programs that do not know JT9.

dB reports to comments

Writes the mode and the sent and received reports into Comments (e.g. FT8 Sent: -10 Rcvd: -12), for logging programs that reject these reports.

Special operating activity to comments

Writes the active special operating activity into Comments, e.g. "EU VHF Contest" or "F/H mode". With an individual contest name such as PACC, "PACC Contest" is used. Not applied when dB reports to comments is on or the comment is retained in the Log QSO window.

Uploads to Cloudlog or Wavelog are set up on the Advanced tab.

PSK Reporter

Setting What it does

Enable PSK Reporter Spotting

Sends your station details and the stations you decode to PSK Reporter. The antenna text comes from Station Information on the Frequencies tab for the current band. Decodes from recorded files are not spotted.

Use TCP/IP connection

Uses TCP instead of UDP. Only needed if your UDP reports get lost on the way.

LiveCQ

LiveCQ is a web service that lists live Q65 (and VHF JT65) activity and shows who is hearing whom.

Setting What it does

Enable Q65 LiveCQ

Master switch (on by default). Uploads your Q65 decodes, and your JT65 decodes on 50 MHz and up, to the destinations checked below. In Q65 it also fetches the "who heard me" green checks.

W3SZ (w3sz.com) and program name

Sends CQ-type messages only to the W3SZ LiveCQ, the same reports WS-MAP and EME65 send there. The drop-down chooses the program name reported: WSJTX (as before the re-branding) or WS.

N6NU (livecq.n6nu.org)

Full destination (on by default): CQ and directed messages. It is the source of the green checks and is required for Q65 Pileup operation (Advanced tab).

Custom: and URL

Sends CQ-type messages only to your own LiveCQ server, e.g. http://localhost:3000/api/livecq_update. Does nothing while the URL is empty. With N6NU off, the green checks are fetched from this server.

Decodes from recorded files go to the N6NU server only, marked so the site hides them by default.

UDP Server

WS sends its status, decodes and logged QSOs over UDP to companion programs such as JTAlert or GridTracker.

Setting What it does

UDP Server

Address of the receiving program, normally 127.0.0.1 (default). With a multicast group address (e.g. 239.255.0.1) several programs can listen at the same time. IPv4 addresses only.

UDP Server port number

Port of the receiving program, default 2237. 0 = no UDP messages.

Outgoing interfaces / Multicast TTL

Only shown for a multicast address. The loop-back interface is enough for programs on the same computer. Keep the TTL at 1 so the traffic stays in your local network.

Accept UDP requests

Lets the companion program control WS, e.g. start a QSO with a station you clicked there. Unchecked, requests are ignored.

Notify on accepted UDP request

Brings the WS window to the front when a request is accepted. The effect depends on the operating system.

Accepted UDP request restores window

Restores a minimized WS window when a request is accepted.

WSJT-X compatibility mode

Identifies WS as "WSJT-X" instead of "WS" (e.g. "WSJT-X - rig"), for programs that only recognise WSJT-X. Takes effect at once.

Secondary UDP Server

Setting What it does

Enable logged contact ADIF broadcast

Sends every logged QSO as an ADIF record over UDP, e.g. to N1MM Logger+.

Server name or IP address

Address of the receiving program, usually 127.0.0.1.

Server port number

UDP port of the receiving program; 2333 for N1MM Logger+ (default). 0 = nothing is sent.

Frequency Calibration

Setting What it does

Slope / Intercept

Corrects a known dial error of your rig:
rig frequency = Intercept + (1 + Slope / 1 000 000) × f
with Intercept in Hz and Slope in ppm. Frequencies sent to the rig and read back from it are corrected, so WS shows the true frequency. Leave both at 0 if your rig is accurate.

How to measure these values is described under Frequency Calibration in the WSJT-X User Guide (FreqCal mode).

Working Frequencies

The frequencies offered in the band selector of the main window. WS shows only the entries for your IARU Region (General tab) and the current mode. Double-click a cell to edit it.

Column What it does

Frequency

The dial frequency in MHz.

Pref

The preferred entry for its band and mode. WS uses it when you click a band button (View) or when it changes band by itself (band hopping). Only one entry per band and mode can be preferred.

Your own label for the entry, shown in the band selector.

Start Date/Time / End Date/Time

The entry is offered only in this period, e.g. for a DXpedition. Empty = always.

Station Information

Per-band details of your station. Double-click a cell to edit it.

Column What it does

Band

The band the row applies to.

Offset

Added to the displayed frequency to get the rig frequency, for transverters. Example: 144 MHz with a 28 MHz IF needs -116 MHz. Default 0.

Antenna Description

Sent to PSK Reporter while you are on this band.

Right-click the table for Delete (removes the selected rows) and Insert …​ (adds a row: Band, Offset (MHz), Antenna).

To create rows quickly, select entries in Working Frequencies (Ctrl+A for all) and drag them onto Station Information. Then fill in offsets and antennas.

Colors

Decode Highlighting

WS colours decodes by category. Everything except CQ in message, My Call in message, Transmitted message and LoTW User needs Show DXCC, grid, and worked-before status on the General tab.

Setting What it does

Highlight list

One line per category; its check box turns it on. Drag lines up or down to set the priority: a higher line wins. Foreground and background are separate, so an "unset" colour is taken from the next enabled line below.

Right-click menu

Foreground color…​ / Background color…​ choose a colour, Unset foreground color / Unset background color clear it. Reset this item to defaults restores the WSJT-X default of that line.

CQ in message, My Call in message, Transmitted message

CQ, CQDX and QRZ calls; decodes addressed to you; messages sent by you.

New DXCC, New Continent, New CQ Zone, New ITU Zone, New US State, New Grid, New Call

Not yet in your log. The …​ on Band variants: not yet worked on the current band.

LoTW User

The station has uploaded its log to LoTW within the age set under Logbook of the World User Validation.

Reset Highlighting to WSJT-X default

The original WSJT-X colours and order. A new installation starts with these.

Reset Highlighting to WS default

The WS scheme, with pastel colours that also suit the dark style. LoTW users are shown in black, other stations in dark red; a CQ from a station you have already worked gets a grey background.

Rescan ADIF Log

Reads wsjtx_log.adi again and rebuilds the worked-before status. The button shows the number of QSOs. You may replace this file with an ADIF export from your logging program.

Highlight by Mode

Worked-before status is kept per mode.

Only grid Fields sought

A grid counts as new only if its field (the first two characters, e.g. JO) has not been worked.

Include extra WAE entities

Shows the extra DARC WAE / CQ Marathon entities (e.g. Sicily, Shetland Is.) by their own name. Unchecked, they are shown as their DXCC country.

Highlight also messages with 73 or RR73

73 and RR73 messages are highlighted like CQs and get country and worked-before marks. They also pass the CQ only filter, which is then labelled CQ/73. On by default.

Highlight all messages

Every decoded message is highlighted like a CQ and gets country and worked-before marks, not only CQ calls (and 73 messages with the option above). Off by default.

Highlight orange: / Highlight blue:

White text on an orange / blue background for the callsigns, grids, prefixes and CQ directions typed into the box below. These entries also trigger the Wanted alert on the Alerts tab.

Entries for Highlight orange and Highlight blue (upper or lower case):

  • Callsigns: a comma after every call, including the last one: K1JT, DG2YCB,

  • Grids: JO33, JN58,

  • Prefixes of 2 or 3 characters between semicolons: ;DL;KH6;. A one-letter prefix such as ;K; only matches calls with a digit in second place (K1ABC, not KH6ABC).

  • All calls starting with one letter: ;K*;. Exclude prefixes by putting them between exclamation marks: ;K*;!KH6!KL!KP!

  • CQ directions with a comma before and after: ,EU, marks "CQ EU …​".

Logbook of the World User Validation

Setting What it does

Users CSV file URL / Fetch Now

Source of the ARRL list of LoTW users and their last upload dates. Fetch Now downloads a fresh copy. WS fetches it by itself only when the file is missing and LoTW User highlighting is on.

Age of last upload less than

Stations count as LoTW users only if their last upload is more recent.

Downloads

Setting What it does

Download Latest CTY.dat

Updates the country, zone and prefix data from country-files.com and rescans the log. CTY File Version shows the version in use.

Download US Callsign States database

Callsign-to-state data for Show US States (General tab), used when a message has no usable grid. Callsign States DB shows its size and date.

Download CALL3.TXT for terrestrial use / Download CALL3.TXT for EME

Callsign and grid database for the Lookup button and for JT4/JT65 Deep Search; the EME version is meant for JT65 Deep Search. The previous file is kept as CALL3_backup.TXT. CALL3 File Version shows the version.

JT65 VHF/UHF/Microwave decoding parameters

Setting What it does

Random erasure patterns

How hard the JT65 soft-decision decoder tries (up to 10n/2 patterns). Higher values are slightly more sensitive but slower; 6 or 7 suits most stations.

Aggressive decoding level

Threshold for JT65 Deep Search (0–10). Higher levels give more decodes, but also more false ones.

Two-pass decoding

JT65: a second decoding pass after the signals found in the first pass have been subtracted.

GUI tweaks for high-resolution monitors

Setting What it does

HighDPI scaling (restart required)

Follows the operating system’s display scaling, so controls are larger and properly proportioned on 4K monitors. On by default.

Increased height of the tab widget (restart required)

Lets the Tx message tabs in the main window grow taller.

Miscellaneous

Setting What it does

Degrade S/N of .wav file / Receiver bandwidth

For offline sensitivity tests: adds noise to .wav files you open, lowering the S/N by the given dB. Set Receiver bandwidth to your receiver’s noise bandwidth so that the value is accurate.

Tx delay

Minimum time between PTT and the start of Tx audio (0 to 0.5 s). FT4 and FT2 always use 20 ms.

Tone spacing: x 2 / x 4

Twice / four times the normal tone spacing, for LF/MF transmitters that divide the frequency by 2 or 4. Only one of them can be checked.

Waterfall spectra: Low sidelobes / Most sensitive

Low sidelobes (default) uses a windowed FFT, so strong signals spread less across the waterfall. Most sensitive uses no window and shows very weak traces slightly better.

Tx delay is no replacement for a hardware sequencer. To protect T/R relays and preamplifiers, use one and test that sequencing is correct.

Special operating activity

Check the box and choose one activity; WS then generates the matching message formats.

Setting What it does

NA VHF

North American VHF/UHF/microwave contests and others where a 4-character grid is the exchange.

NCCC Sprint

With NA VHF only: the NCCC Sprint short-message protocol for FT4 (and FT2).

EU VHF Contest

European VHF+ contests: report, serial number and 6-character locator.

WW Digi Contest / ARRL Digi Contest

World-Wide Digi contest / ARRL International Digital Contest.

Q65 Pileup

Exchanges a 4-character locator instead of a report, giving the DX operator q3-level sensitivity. Especially useful for 6 m EME DXpeditions.

ARRL Field Day / FD Exch

Your exchange: number of transmitters, class and ARRL/RAC section, or "DX" (e.g. 6A SNJ).

FT Roundup messages / FT RU Exch

FT Roundup and similar contests. Exchange: US state, Canadian province or "DX" (also for Alaska and Hawaii).

Fox / Hound

FT8 DXpedition Mode: Fox for the DXpedition, Hound to call it. Read the FT8 DXpedition Mode User Guide before using it.

SuperFox mode

With Fox or Hound: transmit or receive the SuperFox waveform.

OTP / Key / Interval

With Fox or Hound: one-time-password verification of the Fox (needs internet). The Fox enters its 16-character Key and signs every Interval messages (1 = every message).

Show OTP messages / OTP URL

For Hounds: WS checks the Fox’s codes at the OTP URL (default https://www.9dx.cc). Show OTP messages displays the verification messages in Band Activity.

CQ with individual contest name / Contest name

Calls e.g. CQ PACC instead of CQ TEST, RU or WW. Not available with Fox, Hound or Q65 Pileup.

Upload QSOs to Cloudlog or Wavelog

Setting What it does

Upload QSOs to Cloudlog or Wavelog

Check the group title to send every logged QSO to your Cloudlog or Wavelog server.

API URL

Base address of your installation, without a trailing slash (e.g. https://log.example.com).

API Key / Station ID

A write-enabled API key and the station profile ID from Cloudlog/Wavelog.

Test API Key

Sends a test QSO in dry-run mode. The button turns green if the key is writable, orange if it is read-only, red if it is invalid.

Upload QSOs to eQSL.cc

Setting What it does

Upload QSOs to eQSL.cc

Check the group title to upload every logged QSO to eQSL.cc.

Username / Password

Your eQSL.cc login.

QTH

Your QTH nickname, if you have more than one QTH on eQSL.cc.

The eQSL.cc password and the API key are stored unencrypted in the settings file.

Alerts

Settings, Alerts tab

WS can announce selected decodes with short spoken alerts ("New DXCC", "My Call" and so on). Alerts are part of every WS installation and are always played on the default audio device of your computer, usually its loudspeaker.

Audio alerts need a second sound device. Your rig must not be connected via the default audio device, or the alerts are transmitted. A rig with a built-in USB sound card (IC-7300, FT-991 and similar) meets this requirement. Test before enabling (see Test below).

Voices

Selects the voice for the alerts. A standard installation has one voice, default.

Test

Plays a test announcement on the default audio device, so you can check where the alerts come out.

New DXCC / New DXCC on Band

A DXCC entity you have not worked yet / not worked on the current band.

New Continent / New Continent on Band

A continent not worked yet / not worked on this band.

New CQ Zone / New CQ Zone on Band

A CQ zone not worked yet / not worked on this band.

New ITU Zone / New ITU Zone on Band

An ITU zone not worked yet / not worked on this band.

New US State / New US State on Band

One of the 50 US States not worked yet / not worked on this band. The state is taken from the callsign, or from the grid if that points to one state only.

New Grid / New Grid on Band

A grid locator not worked yet / not worked on this band. Only messages with a grid count.

My Call

A message addressed to you.

DX Call or DX Grid in message

The callsign in the DX Call box, or the grid in the DX Grid box, appears in a decode.

CQ in message

Any CQ call.

Wanted callsigns, grids, prefixes and directional calls

A decode matches your Highlight orange or Highlight blue entries on the Colors tab (only while that highlighting is on), or a Whitelist entry while Filters  Highlight Whitelist entries is checked.

Message received

A QSY message for your call or for the DX Call arrives. Only QSY messages trigger this alert, so it stays rare.

Enable Audio Alerts

Master switch: no alert sounds while it is off. The button turns green when on. On Windows, WS then also plays a short test sound at startup.

The categories above the line need Show DXCC, grid, and worked-before status checked on the General tab.

Alerts work independently of the highlighting on the Colors tab. But you only see which decode triggered an alert if the matching highlight is switched on there, so enable the same categories on both tabs.

Stations on the Ignore List (added with the Ignore button below DX Grid) trigger no alerts except My Call, unless the BP (bypass) checkbox is checked. Clear the list with File  Erase Ignore List.
With band hopping off, right-click the Band Hopping button on the main window for a longer test of the default audio device.

Filters

Settings, Filters tab

Filters decide which decodes appear in the Band Activity pane. The lists on this tab work together with the quick filters on the Filters menu (see Filters), where you also switch the territory filters on and off.

While a filter hides decodes, the status label at the bottom left of the main window turns from green "Receiving" to cyan "Receiving, Filters On".

To see everything again for a while, check BP (bypass) on the main window: all filters are ignored and the label shows "Receiving, Filters bypassed". Uncheck it to return to your filters.

Blacklist, Whitelist and Always Pass are switched off automatically in Special Operating modes, so you do not miss a station. Blacklist and Whitelist stay active for Hounds.

Filter lists

Setting What it does

Territories 1-4

Up to four country names, or parts of names, for the Hide stations from Territory 1-4 and Highlight stations from Territory 1-4 items on the Filters menu; the menu items then show your text. Write the name as WS displays it, e.g. Japan, U.S.A. or Canary Is..

Blacklist
Hide messages containing the following callsigns or keywords

Hides messages that contain any of the entries: whole callsigns, parts of callsigns, grids or words (e.g. pirate calls or contest messages).

Whitelist
Show only messages containing the following callsigns or keywords

Shows only messages that contain one of the entries; all others are hidden, except those on the Always Pass list.

Always Pass
Always pass messages with the following keywords

Messages with these entries are always shown, even if the Blacklist, the Whitelist or a Hide item for a territory, a continent or stations worked before would hide them.

Each list has twelve fields, one entry per field. Entries are converted to capital letters. A list only works while its checkbox is checked.

Options

Setting What it does

Apply filters only to the callsigns of the calling stations

The lists are checked against the calling station only (normally the second word, the third for directional CQs such as CQ NA). An entry then has to match the beginning of the callsign, so a prefix like JA works. Unchecked, an entry matches anywhere in the message.

Use filters for Wait and Pounce, CQ: First, etc. only (all messages are still displayed)

Nothing is hidden in Band Activity; the filters only decide which stations Wait and Pounce and the CQ: choices respond to. See Wait features.

Quick Filters: Hide/Ignore/Highlight "worked today and yesterday" instead of "worked today" (UTC)

The three "worked today" items on the Filters menu also include stations worked yesterday (UTC).

The best place to get help is the wsjt-x-improved-community mailing list or the WSJT Group. Someone with similar interests and equipment has most likely solved the same problem already. You must join a list before you can post to it.
